In the earlier stages of Fallout 4, Bethesda had the nerve to tease us with the Cryolater, a badass weapon that freezes enemies in their tracks. Just as my character was getting ready to exit Vault 111, I spotted the Cryolater in the Overseer’s Room and it caused me to salivate like Homer Simpson thinking about doughnuts. Yes, I wanted his sweet gun that turns my enemies into icicles. Unfortunately, it was locked in an a display case with a Master Lock. Oh well, maybe later, right?
The obvious way to get your hands on the Cryolater in Fallout 4 is to level up to at least level 18 with a perception of 4 to unlock the Master Lockpicking skill. Once that’s done, you can return to the vault, pick the display case’s Master Lock and get down to business. However, there’s an even easier way to get the Cryolater: ask Dogmeat to go fetch it for you.
Yes, it’s true. Dogmeat isn’t just an adorable dog that follows you around, he also has the ability to find enemies and gear. If you ask him to search for items while you are in the same room as the Cryolater (remember, it’s one of the first interesting things you see before exiting the vault), he’ll just get it for you. Using what we can only assume is “dog-magic”, Dogmeat will bypass the lock and bring you your prize. Look:
I can almost guarantee that Bethesda patches this out sooner rather than later so use Dogmeat to get the Cryolater much earlier than anticipated and enjoy freezing baddies to death.
