63.3 Million PS4 Consoles Have Been Shipped

Over 60 million sold.

Sony shipped 63.3 million PlayStation consoles as of June 30th, according to the company’s first quarter financial report.

The report covers the period between April 1st and June 30th, and the figure represents the number of units shipped to retailers, not sold directly to consumers. However, since a statement on June 13th revealed that the company had sold 60.4 million consoles worldwide, it’s likely that sales aren’t far off.

Shipments of the console are down year-over-year, but Sony forecasted this anyway. During the same period last year Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End was released, one of the biggest and most popular games on the system. On top of that, console prices have continued to decline as the generation becomes older, though the PlayStation VR headset and PlayStation 4 Pro would have offset that somewhat.

To put the most recent figures into perspective, the Nintendo Switch has sold 4.7 million units in most of its lifetime – between March 1st and June 30th. Between April 1st and June 30th Sony has shipped an extra 3.3 million PlayStation 4 units. It launched in 2013. At this point the PlayStation 4 looks unstoppable, and it’s hard to argue otherwise when it’s believed to have sold over more than double what Microsoft’s Xbox One has (around 30 million).

With a lack of exclusive titles releasing later this year, Sony probably won’t be expecting sales to improve much over the coming months. Yet the current figures show it’s well on track to becoming one of the most successful consoles of all time.
