Firmware Update 5.0 Released for PS4

The much-anticipated update is now available to the public.

As of today, update 5.0 for the PS4 is now available to download. The update was previously only available through a private beta phase. Today, upon downloading update 5.0, all players will see some notable changes to their system. With a file size of 375 MB there are many features and changes included in this update, but first here are some of the most exciting ones.

Competitive gaming is making its way to the PS4 with the addition of Team Tournaments. Players will now be able to create teams with other users and compete competitively for a limited selection of games. For now, only four games support Team Tournaments — Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, Mantis Burn Racing, and World of Tanks. While there’s not a lot of games supporting Team Tournaments now, more titles are expected to gain competitive play in the future.

PS4 Pro users can now Twitch stream their games at 60fps/1080p. No word if this feature will be added to the original PS4, but it doesn’t seem likely.

A new family system has been added where you can add users of your PS4 as family members. As the family manager you can make other users family managers and customize parental controls for each user. Including yourself, seven family members can be added to your family. You’ll also be able to manage your family settings and parental controls from your computer of smartphone.

Here are some other features update 5.0 adds:

  • You can now customize your friends list to make it easier when creating groups and sending invites.
  • PSVR users can now get notifications from spectator comments directly to your headset.
  • Pop-up notifications can now be disabled while watching videos or movies. Notifications can also be viewed in the Quick Menu now.
  • New system languages have been added and include Hungarian, Czech, Indonesian, Vietnamese, Greek, Thai, and Romanian.

PlayStation is making some big moves during the month of October. Along with the release of this latest update Sony announced they will be releasing an updated PSVR headset. Sony could be gearing up for an even bigger announcement before the end of the year. For now, we’ll have to wait and see what Sony has planned.
