Grand Theft Auto Online saw record numbers of players in June and July and just had its best financial quarter to date, according to publisher Take-Two’s recent earnings call.
It’s thought that the Gunrunning update, which allowed players to purchase Mobile Command Centres and Bunkers, had a big part to play in the increase in player count. Take-Two are now confident that Grand Theft Auto Online can continue to be successful into 2018.
Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two, said: “Grand Theft Auto Online delivered its best quarter ever, substantially exceeding our net sales expectations, and was once again the single largest contributor to recurrent consumer spending.”
He continued: “On the heels of the June 13 release of the substantial Gunrunning update, June and July successively became our two biggest months ever for Grand Theft Auto Online monthly active users. And Rockstar Games will continue to support the game going forward. As a result of Grand Theft Auto Online’s performance in the first quarter, we now expect the game to deliver net sales growth during fiscal 2018, another consecutive year of record results.”
It’s an incredible achievement for a game that was first released four years ago, and cements Grand Theft Auto V’s place as the biggest game of the current generation.
There’s no doubt that much of the game’s success has come from PC players, yet Take-Two are still quiet on whether or not Red Dead Redemption 2, developer Rockstar’s next blockbuster title, will be released on the format too.
“Any updates about any of our titles will come from our labels,” president of Take-Two, Karl Slatoff, said.
