5 Things You Didn’t Know About Lara Croft

Lara Croft, the First Lady of Video Game Badassery, is one of the most iconic video game characters ever created. And you might think you know a lot about Lara Croft having raided tombs with her since 1996, but here are 8 things you didn’t know about Lara Croft.

1. Lara Croft wasn’t her original name

The character’s creator, Toby Gard, said that Lara Croft’s original name was supposed to be Laura Cruz. However, the game’s developers wanted a more British influence for the female lead. Lara Croft was the closest name to Laura Cruz in the phonebook and that’s how they chose her name after deciding to make her more British.

2. Lara Croft was originally an Indiana Jones rip-off

Tomb Raider creator Toby Gard’s original idea for Lara Croft was a male Indiana Jones look-a-like. Presumably fearing a massive lawsuit from Steven Spielberg and George Lucas, Gard was told by his bosses to make the character more original. He toyed with making Croft a muscular woman and a Nazi-like militant before settling on the shapely treasure hunter we know and love.

3. Lara Croft’s famous features were a programming accident

After settling on the name and design of Lara Croft, a programming error accidentally made her breasts 150 percent larger than they intended. The creative team decided to roll with the mistake. Right…a mistake…

4. Lara Croft has held 6 Guinness World Records

Despite being a fictional character, Lara Croft has racked up 6 Guinness World Records in her career. Lara is credited with “Most Successful Video Game Heroine,” “Most Recognizable Female Character in a Video”, “Most Detailed Video Game Character” whereas the Tomb Raider franchise has held records for “Highest Grossing Computer Game Spin Off”, “Most Successful Live-Action Transfer” and “Most Official Real Life Stand-Ins in a Video Game.”

5. She’s also a singer

Lara Croft was so popular in the 1990’s, she released two singles in France. One her songs was called “Getting Naked” and we can only assume that Lara Croft singing about getting naked is still the most popular song ever in France.

The Rise of Tomb Raider is set to release on November 10th, 2015 for the Xbox One and the Xbox 360.
