Following the surprise reveal that Final Fantasy VII’s Cloud Strife would be coming soon to Super Smash Bros. via DLC, it’s abundantly clear that Nintendo can and will put any character it wants in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS.
In case you missed it and you don’t believe that Cloud Strife will be joining Nintendo’s side-scrolling beat ’em up, Cloud’s Super Smash Bros. reveal trailer is below.
Cloud is one of many classic video game characters that technically has no direct affiliation with Nintendo to be included in a Super Smash Bros. title. Others include Sonic the Hedgehog, Mega Man, Pac-Man, Ryu from Street Fighter and Solid Snake from Metal Gear Solid. In fact, Final Fantasy VII is a bit of a sore spot for Nintendo diehards. The game was initially supposed to be for Nintendo 64 but cartridge constraints forced SquareSoft to jump ship for the PlayStation where it would go on to become an iconic PlayStation release and one of the most beloved games of all time.
Since Nintendo is clearly no longer bound to include characters from their intellectual properties (or perhaps third parties just think it’s bad business to turn down a chance to have their characters appear in Super Smash Bros.), these are the characters we’d like to join the Super Smash Bros. roster.
Please keep in mind that there is absolutely no guarantee that these classic characters end up as playable fighters in Super Smash Bros. but what’s the harm in dreaming that they might be someday?
Banjo Kazooie

Wouldn’t you love to brawl as a music-loving bear that wears his bird-brained best friend in his backpack? We certainly do. As far as Smash Bros. fans are concerned, Banjo Kazooie have the best chance of getting included because Microsoft boss Phil Spencer said he would have no problem with Rare IP (which includes Banjo Kazooie) getting included in Super Smash Bros.
Joanna Dark

If Rare Games is cool with their copyrighted characters appearing in Super Smash Bros., then why not include Joanna Dark? All Nintendo would have to do is make a few tweaks to Zero Suit Samus and bam! Nintendo-nostalgia fun for all.
Sora

If Cloud can be in Super Smash Bros., why can’t Sora? He’s like a family-friendly version of Cloud that seems a bit more suited for Nintendo’s younger demographic. Beating on Mario with a Keyblade would be so much fun though…
Crash Bandicoot

The only video game character that could rival Mario at the height of his popularity. It would be interesting if only to revive Crash who has been absent from video games for far too long.
Lara Croft

Don’t you wish that you could see all the first ladies of video games square off together in a melee? Peach vs. Lara Croft vs. Samus vs. Joanna Dark? Now that’s a dream Super Smash Bros. match. However, that’s all it will be for many years to come probably. Just a dream.
Sephiroth

This one’s easy. If Nintendo is letting Cloud Strife join the Super Smash Bros. fray, then why not also include his mortal enemy Sephiroth? Sure, the massive reach his sword has would give him an unfair advantage but it would be so much fun to make Cloud and Sephiroth face-off over and over again.
Trevor Philips

This will obviously never happen. Trevor Philips will never join Super Smash Bros. because he’s too manic, violent and overall disgusting that Nintendo would never allow it. But still, it would be awesome to have Trevor Philips go all rampage on the cutesy cartoon characters of Nintendo.
