New Overwatch Map Revealed as Junkertown

Home of Junkrat and Roadhog.

Blizzard has revealed a new Overwatch map, Junkertown, home of the crazed duo Junkrat and Roadhog.

In a preview video before its main conference at Gamescom on Wednesday, the developer gave Overwatch fans a glimpse of the new escort map, and it looks as chaotic as the characters it was once home to. You can watch the trailer below.

In the Overwatch lore, Junkertown is depicted as the area hit hardest by the Omnic Crisis, a period of ten years in which the self-aware robots rebelled against their human creators. In order to make peace with the rebellion, the Australian government gave Junkertown to the Omnics, a move which forced locals out of the area. Some of the affected, including Junkrat and Roadhog, combined to create the Australian Liberation Front in a rebellion against the Omnics. They were successful, destroying the fusion core powering the Omnics, but in doing so left the wasteland now known as Junkertown. Here’s both characters’ story.

The map itself is just how you’d expect Junkrat’s home to be, with buildings containing traps and bombs, smiley face symbols planted all around, and a payload made from blown up bits and pieces. Destroyed Omnics can be found in certain areas, as well as a room filled with gold.

Junkertown is the first map to be released on Overwatch since Lunar Horizon Colony, an area that launched alongside new game modes for the first person shooter’s first anniversary. It’s been announced that another game mode, deathmatch, will soon be following Junkertown, in which players battle it out for the highest score of eliminations, the most common mode in most modern first person online shooters. Overwatch has proven itself to be very different to such games over the last year, though.

There’s been no announcement as to when Junkertown will launch, however it will more than likely be released on PC before PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
