Pikachu Detective Game Features Talking & a Tiny Hat

It has been hinted at since 2013, but today we finally get our first look at the Pikachu Detective game! Coming soon for the 3DS, Great Detective Pikachu: The Birth of a New Duo makes players pair up with a talking, tiny hat-wearing, coffee-drinking Pikachu to solve mysteries. And yes, Pikachu does indeed say more than variations of his own name. Gameplay looks unlike any other Pokémon game, with a focus on animated sequences and voice acting.

The phrase “Pikachu Detective game” sounds too insane to be true. If you agree, watch the teaser trailer below and prepare to be shocked that there is such a thing as a Pikachu Detective game.

Is it just me or does Pikachu’s new baritone suit him a lot better than his high-pitch falsetto?

Meitantei Pikachu: Shin Konbi Tanjyou will be released on the Nintendo eShop on February 3 in Japan. It’s priced at 1,500 yen ($12.65), but will be available for the special price of 1,200 yen ($10.12) until February 29. Nintendo has yet to announce if Detective Pikachu will be released in Europe and North America, but given most Pokémon titles do get worldwide releases, it certainly seems likely that it will. Plus, it is Pokémon’s 20th anniversary. Commemorating the milestone with a Super Bowl commercial and a small, localized release makes little sense.

What mysteries will players have to solve in the upcoming Pikachu Detective game? Let us know what you think the electrifying yellow cutie might get up to in his tiny hat in the comments below.
