A game that was expected to propel the Xbox One in the spotlight might be getting a sequel, but it most likely won’t be an Xbox exclusive. A recent tweet from Sunset Overdrive developer Insomniac Games has sparked rumors about developing a possible sequel to the open-world third person shooter.
Sunset Overdrive was released as an Xbox One exclusive in 2014. Most fans assumed any future extensions of the title would remain on the Xbox One since Microsoft funded development for the game. The game saw moderate success in sales but still fell short of expectations only selling a little over 1 million units.
While Insomniac hasn’t directly stated a sequel would be released on other consoles, the fact that Microsoft is no longer a publisher for the game spurs suspicion. Insomniac is clearly looking for any potential publishers so they can start working on a sequel to Sunset Overdrive. Insomniac owns the rights to the game, so they essentially can bring the title to any console if they can find a publisher that agrees to their terms. The developer has usually paired with Sony PlayStation on projects in the past, such as the highly successful Spyro series along with the Ratchet & Clank games. Insomniac and Sony’s close ties are even more of a reason any sequels to Sunset Overdrive would be released on the PS4.
This would be an unfortunate loss for Microsoft since the Xbox One has been criticized in lacking exclusive titles. Something similar has happened to Xbox in the past with Titanfall 2. The original Titanfall was an Xbox exclusive, but the game’s developers, Respawn, brought the sequel to the PS4.
Still, this is all speculation. No official word has been announced on the future of the Sunset Overdrive series, but the developers are obviously eager to expand the series. We’ll just have to wait and see which publisher takes on the project.
