Sony to Launch PlayStation 5 in 2019, Predicts Analyst

2020 at the latest.

Sony could release a new console as early as 2019, according to one analyst.

Michael Pachter of Wedbush Securities told GamingBolt that he expects the company to release another “half-step” console by 2020 at the latest.

My expectation that is that it’s not coming out in 2018. That [it will be] 2019 or 2020 but probably 2019” he said. “Sony is probably timing it better because they are going to bring out a 4K-capable device when the 4K TV market reaches 50% in the USA and 35% in the rest of the world.

Regarding whether or not he thinks it will be a brand new console, Pachter said: “The PS4 Pro is better [from a technical perspective] than the PS4, so I think that’s a half step towards the PS5. I think the PS5 will be another half step.”

Playsation Pro Price vs PS4

Sony only released the PlayStation Pro at the end of last year, but the launch of Microsoft’s Xbox One X this year could force the Japanese company to re-think its strategy.

We already know that Microsoft’s latest system will be backwards compatible with Xbox One’s library, something that Sony will implement with its next console: “The PlayStation 5… how much faster can it be? It will surely support 4K. Will it support 240 frames per second? Great. Will it play games that were made for the PS4 Pro? That’s the question. I think it will. So I think they will build a console that will backwards compatible with the PS4 Pro. So I think it will be perceived by the consumers to be a half step and I think Shawn [Layden, president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment America] is telling the truth when he says it will be a full-fledged console.”

It’s important to note that this is purely speculation, and analysts regularly predict the wrong outcome. Just a few months ago Damian Thong predicted that Sony would release a new system in 2018, vastly different from Pachter’s views.

Sony refused to comment on the matter, stating: “We don’t comment on rumor or speculation.” Even if its new console were to release in 2019, we likely wouldn’t hear about it for a long time.
