Prepare to feel old…2016 marks Pokémon 20th anniversary and the milestone is set to celebrated with a shiny new Super Bowl commercial.
Pokémon has never advertised during the Super Bowl before, yet this year they went ahead and paid $5 million for a 30-second spot. That’s a lot of money to spend on a commercial that merely promotes the 20th anniversary. Would it not make more sense to spend that kind of money on a commercial when there’s a new game heading for release? Doesn’t make much sense to me but then again, Pokémon’s been going on for 20 years strong, so who am I to tell them how to spend their marketing budget.
2016 will see the launch of Pokkén Tournament for Wii U, as well as smartphone spin-off Pokémon Go where players collect monsters as you travel around in real life. However, Pokémon’s Super Bowl commercial doesn’t make any mention of these two games. It’s only to mark the 20th anniversary.
Aside from the Super Bowl commercial, Pokémon is commemorating the 20th anniversary with movie re-releases and rare Pokémon distributions for the games. Some people have speculated that there might be a surprise NX (Nintendo’s rumoured brand new console) launch title later in the year, but don’t hold your breath just yet.
