We are always wary of popular video games getting adapted into major motion pictures (see: the Street Fighter movie, the Mortal Kombat movies, Super Mario Bros., DOA: Dead or Alive, Bloodrayne, etc.), but if there was ever a game series that had a fighting chance of making a compelling movie it is The Witcher series. With its emphasis on storytelling and three dimensional characters, the Witcher series could conceivably make a great movie franchise, which is the American production company behind The Mummy franchise, the Sean Daniel Company, is working on a movie based on the the Witcher novels with Polish film company Platige Image.
According to Platige Image, the film will be directed by Tomasz Bagiński, who was nominated for an Academy Award for an animated short film titled The Cathedral. Bagiński also did cinematics for the Witcher games and is currently the creative director at Platige Image.
Since most people only know Geralt of Rivia from the Witcher games series and less so from the novels, it is reassuring to have someone like Bagiński on board as he’s already familiar with the tone of the story and will no doubt help in making a Witcher movie compelling to a non-gamer audience.
The upcoming Witcher movie will focus on Geralt, whom you know intimately from the games, and will be based on “themes from” the short stories “The Witcher” and “Lesser Evil.” “Lesser Evil” details how Geralt came to be known as “the butcher of Blaviken.”
Thania St. John, a veteran TV writer who has written for shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, is attached to the project to script, but no casting details have been announced yet. The Witcher movie is scheduled for a 2017 release and is “planned to be the beginning of a series.”
As of right now, it is easy to be optimistic about an upcoming Witcher movie as the screenwriter and the director both seem perfectly capable of bringing the Witcher universe to the big screen. The only question is: Who will play Geralt? If they cast Zac Efron as Geralt, it the Witcher movie would no doubt be an unmitigated disaster before it even begins shooting.
