13 Upcoming Open World Games in 2017

They’re coming, and they’re getting bigger and bigger…

Open worlds are a favorite among gamers (including yours truly). The ability to go wherever you want, explore vast terrains, and take quests at your leisure creates an inviting gaming experience that never seems to end. And in the near future, that may be literal.

Thanks to ever-evolving technology, open worlds are expanding from massive to infinite and we’re already seeing the beginnings of digital universes bigger than our own. 2017 brings a fresh crop of open world games and we break down the best yet to come, including a few with worlds larger than we’ve ever seen before.

13. Red Dead Redemption 2

Release date: TBA 2017
Available on: PS4, Xbox One

Rockstar fans rejoiced last year when the developer confirmed the upcoming sequel to their favorite old western game. While the preview trailer left much to the imagination and created more questions than it answered, it did provide a glimpse into a vast open world and the outline of seven men — leaving fans to speculate that the game may offer up to seven playable characters and may contain the largest open world Rockstar has ever created.

12. Agents of Mayhem

Agents of Mayhem 2

Release date: TBA 2017
Available on: PC, PS4, Xbox One

While it looks a bit like an Overwatch-clone set inside the Saints Row universe, Agents of Mayhem expands outside the battle arena and into an open world. Set in a futuristic South Korea, a group of heroes (M.A.Y.H.E.M.) battle against a terrorist organization (L.E.G.I.O.N.) Early gameplay and trailers hint that the game is without the typical Saints Row grittiness, but makes up for it with impressive controls and a beautiful Asian-inspired setting.

11. Xenoblade Chronicles 2

Xenoblade Chronicles 2

Release date: TBA 2017
Available on: Nintendo Switch

There’s no doubt about it: the Switch console is a success. Now, Nintendo just needs to follow through with enough high quality games to keep fans entertained. Looks like we’re getting just that with Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Its predecessor was a big hit on the Wii U and judging by early gameplay footage on the Switch, XC2 with feature the same wonderful game mechanics and another breathtaking open world for us to explore.
